On the one hand, there was professional pride. On the other, practicality. Because on one hand, when the Colts’ Pro Bowl defensive end was asked Thursday if he wanted Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss to play this week, there was part of him that wanted to beat the Vikings straight up, no excuses. And then there was the other side of the dilemma. “I kind of say I want their best shot,” Freeney said, smiling, as the Colts (4-3) prepared to play the NFC North-leading Vikings (5-2) Monday at 9 p.m. at the RCA Dome. “But at the same time, Randy Moss is pretty dangerous.” Moss, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is more than just pretty dangerous. He is a key to the Vikings’ offense, the player around whom much of their game plan is geared. He also is one of the NFL’s most durable superstars, and in seven NFL seasons, he never has missed a game, and never has missed a start. This week, that could change. Moss, who leads the Vikings with eight touchdown receptions and also has 394 yards on 26 receptions, sustained a hamstring injury against the New Orleans Saints on October 17. He has played nine snaps in two games since, and has not caught a pass during that span. Moss is listed as questionable on the injury report, and Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice this week wasn’t specific on Moss’ status for Monday. “He’s progressing every day,” Tice said. “He’s obviously not the factor we want him to be right now. We have to be so intelligent about the injury.” Tice said Moss played the first week after the injury to maintain his streak of never having missed a game, and that he played against the New York Giants this past week with the idea that he would be used extensively when the Vikings got near the goal line. The Vikings struggled offensively in the first half of a 34-13 loss to the Giants, and Minnesota never got near the end zone in the first half. By the second half, Tice said Moss’ hamstring had tightened and he finished having played just seven plays. “He really wasn’t a factor,” Tice said. “It’s an injury we’re going to have to monitor. I don’t expect the league will see the real Randy Moss for a few more weeks.” Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy, who joked early this week that although he liked watching Moss play he wouldn’t mind if he didn’t get to see him this week, said he expected Moss will play Monday night. “Superstars have a way of making miraculous recoveries,” Dungy said. Said Colts safety Bob Sanders, “Randy Moss is a great receiver. The coaches will have a good game plan for us, either way. If he plays. he’s going to make his share of plays, but we’ve got to make sure we don’t give him the big play. “We’ve got to run to the ball, make sure tackles and play hard.” Dungy said whether Moss plays injured, whether he is healthy or whether he doesn’t play at all, the Colts’ game plan doesn’t change much. If Moss is healthy, Dungy said the Vikings’ offense is among the more dangerous in the NFL because his ability to catch a variety of passes usually forces defenses to defend him with at least two defensive backs. “He’s like (Colts wide receiver) Marvin (Harrison) in that he impacts the game every play,” Dungy said. “You have to design your coverages knowing, ‘Hey, if I put a guy in single coverage, I’m taking a big risk.’ Even games where he doesn’t catch but two or three balls, he really impacts the game. He’s one of the reasons they’re one of the best running teams in football, because of the coverages you have to play to keep him contained. “He’s a talented guy. I don’t know if the league has seen a big man with the kind of skills he has.” But Dungy said even if Moss is injured, teams have defended him with multiple defenders. “I guess you can watch a guy in warm-ups and say, ‘Is he eighty percent, ninety percent — whatever,’’’ Dungy said. “Against Tennessee (a 20-3 Vikings victory two weeks ago), they (the Titans) rolled a lot to him. They double-covered him. They got some good plays off before he came out of the game. “The threat of the atomic bomb is still real.” If Moss doesn’t play, Colts players said this week said the Vikings’ offense — ranked first in total yardage this season — is still dangerous. Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, the NFC’s starting quarterback in last year’s Pro Bowl, has thrown for two touchdowns with two interceptions in two games since Moss’ injury, but in seven games this season, he leads the NFC with a 114.2 passer rating. For the season, Culpepper has completed 183 of 258 passes for 2,180 yards and 20 touchdowns with five interceptions, and Vikings wide receivers Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson have combined for 792 yards and eight touchdowns. “Moss is very capable, but they have other receivers who can go down the field as well,” Colts linebacker David Thornton said. “Daunte likes to throw the ball deep down the middle and down the sideline. We know they’re going to do that. They’re not going to stray from their game plan. “We have to prepare for their game plan whoever dresses out. Moss or no Moss.” Vikings running back Mewelde Moore, a rookie from Tulane, has started the last four games in place of suspended starter Onterrio Smith, who will return from the suspension Monday. Moore has rushed for 376 yards on 64 carries, a 5.9-yards-per-carry average, and Smith rushed for 198 yards on 42 carries — a 4.7-yard average before the suspension. “It’s a huge challenge this week,” Thornton said. “Daunte can run and pass, so he has two weapons going into it. The front four definitely has to put some pressure on them this week. It’s a big challenge for everyone and we’re exited about it.” “They have tons of weapons. They have a great running back. Their receivers are one of the best groups in the league. It’s a tough challenge. “We’re up for it. We just have to be prepared to go do it.” Said Colts defensive tackle Montae Reagor, “Minnesota’s very good in all phases — very explosive quarterback, running back, receivers. It’s another week of being very fundamentally sound. You’ve got to be on top of the details just as much.” Reagor, like Freeney and Dungy, was asked if he preferred to play the Vikings with Moss. After a pause, he said, “No.” “If he plays, ‘Oh, well,’’’ Reagor said, then added with a smile, “But I’d rather see him on the sideline.”

Moss Goes Through Full Practice

Randy Moss showed off his improving hamstring in a full practice Friday. Although his role may still be limited somewhat, his full workout was good news for the Vikings.
Vikings coaches and fans were waiting to hear the words that came Friday after practice — Randy Moss made it through a full practice.Moss came through the 75-minute practice Friday without incident and was upgraded from questionable to probable on the Vikings injury report with a hamstring injury. While Moss still may be limited in his role on Sunday — he likely won’t be able to run at full speed on deep routes — his upgrading is a good sign. "His approach is much more focused and (he'll) definitely suit up this week and not just to keep the string going."

Vikings receiver Randy Moss practises with strained hamstring

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Randy Moss practised Wednesday despite a strained right hamstring, but Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Tice wouldn't say what kind of role his star receiver would play Sunday.
Moss was limited in practice and left early to get treatment for his hamstring, which he injured Oct. 17 at New Orleans. Tice sounded optimistic about Moss' recovery and expected him to be limited again Thursday.
"He did really everything we wanted him to do and probably a little bit more," the coach said.
Moss made a token start last Sunday against Tennessee to keep his consecutive games streak alive at 102. But he was limited to two plays of decoy duty.
He's expected to have a bigger role against this weekend against the Giants.
"We want to see how he progresses throughout the course of the week," Tice said. "Each day he wakes up is going to be a judgment of where he's at."
Moss was listed questionable on Wednesday's injury report.
"I think he's going to be ready," quarterback Daunte Culpepper said. "I think he will be just by talking with him and being around him. ... He wants to be on the field. It hurt him really bad not to be out there."

Vikings vs Giants

Only a Week 2 loss to Philadelphia separates the Vikings (5-1) from a undefeated start. That's not so bad, considering the Eagles have dusted off all six of their opponents. But fast starts don't always equal successful seasons in Minnesota. Last year, they were 6-0 and looking invincible when the Giants traveled to the Metrodome and kick-started the Vikings' 3-7 finish with by beating them, 29-17.
QB Daunte Culpepper looks even better this year, however. Though he slowed last week by throwing only one touchdown, he has tossed a league-high 19. At his current pace, he will finish with 50. Of Culpepper's 1,949 yards, 394 have been thrown to WR Randy Moss, who played only two snaps on Sunday. And rookie RB Mewelde Moore has posted three straight impressive games (92, 109, and 138 yards rushing).
GAME PLAN
Oh, those red-zone blues. This season, the Giants have made 21 trips inside their opponents' 20-yard line and have come away with seven touchdowns and six field goals. Eight times they have failed to score. Their defense had played well enough to mask those deficiencies until Sunday's 28-13 loss to Detroit in which three red zone trips produced only six points. Against the Vikings, there probably won't be any inside handoffs to RB Ron Dayne. Expect a return to the short fade pass to TE Jeremy Shockey that worked so well in the previous two games.
STORY LINES
Culpepper and Giants' RB Tiki Barber (989 total yards, 5 TDs) are among the early-season favorites for MVP. ... The Giants shut out the Vikings, 41-0, in the 2000 NFC Championship game. ... QB Kurt Warner, who played six seasons in St. Louis, is 31-7 as a starter in domes.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
Nick Greisen. The Giants didn't sign Barrett Green to a five-year deal to sit the bench, even if it is for disciplinary reasons. But as long as Greisen plays like he did on Sunday when he made seven tackles, it will be difficult for Coughlin to relent. Greisen made no mental mistakes according to Coughlin and had a sack that was negated by a penalty.
KEY MATCHUP
Randy Moss vs. the Giants' secondary. Moss will be the second top-tier receiver the Giants have faced this season. Eagles WR Terrell Owens had three touchdowns in the season opener. Since then, Giants CBs Will Allen and Will Peterson have played much better. On Sunday, however, Lions QB Joey Harrington had his first 200-plus yard game and threw for two touchdowns. Moss has a hamstring injury and won't be 100 percent, but he is still dangerous. Rookie S Gibril Wilson has never faced a receiver of Moss' caliber.
INJURIES
Giants: DT Fred Robbins (shoulder) is questionable. C Shaun O'Hara (knee) and CB Frank Walker (ankle) suffered minor injuries against the Lions.
Vikings: LB Chris Claiborne (calf) is out. C Cory Withrow (knee) is doubtful. Moss and OL Adam Goldberg (knee, ankle) are questionable. C Matt Birk (concussion) and RB Moe Williams (hamstring) are probable.
KEY STAT
Heading into last week, the Giants ranked first in the NFC in yards per first-down play. But after averaging only 4.4 yards in Sunday's loss to Detroit, they dropped to fifth. The new leader is this week's opponent, Minnesota. A look to the top five teams in yards per first down in the conference:
Team;;plays;;yards;;average
Minnesota Vikings;;183;;1,174;;6.42
Atlanta Falcons;;177;;1,113;;6.29
St. Louis Rams;;195;;1208;;6.19
Dallas Cowboys;;162;;995;;6.14
Giants;;170;;1034;;6.08

Moss fined $5,000 for shoving match in Bears game

MINNEAPOLIS -- Randy Moss was fined $5,000 by the NFL for his role in a scuffle three weeks ago between the Vikings and Chicag Bears. The league informed the Vikings on Friday about the fine against the star receiver, team spokesman Bob Hagan said Saturday.Moss' agent, Dante DiTrapano, said he and his client had not received official notice from the league but will file an appeal when they do."It just seems to me like if anybody got fined it should have been the player with the illegal hit," DiTrapano said. "Players protect their teammates, and I think that's all Randy was doing."The confrontation started after Bears safety Todd Johnson hit receiver Nate Burleson hard and late during a fourth-quarter incompletion. Johnson drew a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness because he appeared to lower his shoulder into Burleson's head.Burleson didn't object to the hit at the time but Moss ran up to Johnson after the play. That touched off a shoving match between several players on both teams, and postgame accusations from Moss of dirty play, which Bears coach Lovie Smith disputed.

WR Moss expected to play more against Giants

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (Oct. 25, 2004) -- Randy Moss is expected to play a meaningful role for the Minnesota Vikings this weekend against the New York Giants, even without a fully healed right hamstring.
The Vikings started Moss against the Titans to keep his consecutive games streak alive at 102, but the All-Pro wide receiver was limited to two snaps and did not catch a pass in Minnesota's 20-3 victory over Tennessee.
"Hopefully he'll progress more this week, and we'll be able to use him in an active role," coach Mike Tice said. "I don't anticipate he'll be at speed enough to play his normal role, which is every play of the game and every situation."
Tice said he didn't know if his star would practice this week, but he indicated Moss could be useful inside the 20-yard line or on third downs against New York.
"We're going to do what's right for the rest of the season, and we're going to do what's right to get Randy Moss back as quickly as we can -- playing at a Randy Moss level," Tice said. "I'm not going to go around the rest of my career and use Randy Moss as a decoy, so we have to do what's best for Randy because we need Randy to accomplish our goals."
Also, linebacker Chris Claiborne will be out again this week with a strained left calf that has cost him two of the last three games. Claiborne's replacement, Raonall Smith, had five tackles, two defended passes and his first career interception against the Titans.

Sunday's NFL Injuries: Randy Moss, Steve McNair injured again - this time in same game

October 25, 2004

(AP) - Priest Holmes had already scored four touchdowns before an ankle sprain knocked him out of the game. Steve McNair and Randy Moss barely worked up a sweat Sunday before injuries sent them to the sidelines.
Holmes tied an NFL record with four touchdowns rushing in a half, but he was slowed in the third quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs' 56-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The ankle injury was described as mild.
The news wasn't as good for McNair or Moss.
McNair, the oft-injured Tennessee Titans quarterback, went down again with a recurrence of the bruised chest that kept him in the hospital for two nights last month.
McNair was hurt on the first play of the second quarter of Tennessee's 20-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and finished 2-for-5 for 2 yards. He walked slowly off the field with a grimace after lying on the turf for a few minutes.
He was hurt on an incomplete pass intended for Derrick Mason. McNair was brought down by the Vikings' rush and apparently hurt in the pile.
And McNair acknowledged he might have to take some more time off.
"This is not going to heal in one or two weeks if I continue to go out there and play," McNair said. "I don't want to sit, but if I have to that's fine. We'll have to discuss that when we get to the evaluation. If I can't go out there and perform I'm not going to play."
That was the situation facing the Vikings.
McNair's injury was somewhat neutralized by Minnesota's loss of Moss, who extended his consecutive games streak to 102, but was limited to two snaps and no catches because of an aggravation of a right hamstring injury.
"It was never un-aggravated," Vikings coach Mike Tice said.
That ended the All-Pro receiver's streak of 101 straight games with a reception, spanning his entire career. Moss, who left the locker room without commenting, also had his streak of 10 straight games with a touchdown catch stopped.
Moss didn't return to the field after halftime.
"Definitely, he's disappointed," fellow Vikings receiver Marcus Robinson said. "He's been playing for 101 straight games, and not to be out there on Sunday - he doesn't know what that feels like. ... Definitely, I know he'll be out there next week. You better believe me."
He was originally injured in the second quarter last week at New Orleans when he tripped and fell after getting tangled up with Saints safety Jay Bellamy on a pass that was intercepted in the end zone. Moss also sat out the second half of that game.
Browns receiver Andre' Davis couldn't get on the field at all for Cleveland's 34-31 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles because of an injury to his left big toe sustained last week.
Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle also missed the game after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat Thursday.
Tampa Bay fullback Mike Alstott was forced out of the Buccaneers' 19-7 victory over Chicago after hurting his right knee in the third quarter. Bucs coach Jon Gruden said the medial collateral ligament was injured, but didn't yet know the severity.

Randy Moss in starting lineup for Vikings

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss is in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans at the Metrodome despite having a hamstring injury.
It is unclear how much action Moss will see and in what situations he will be used in after sustaining the injury in last weekend's win over the New Orleans Saints. He went down with just under five minutes left in the second quarter as he was battling with a defender to get position on a long pass from Daunte Culpepper.
Moss, who was officially listed as questionable, finished last week's game with two catches for 89 yards and a touchdown against the Saints, helping Minnesota to a 38-31 victory. Even so, this is a game the Vikings should win with or without Randy Moss, who will be a game-time decision because of a strained hamstring and play a limited role, at best.
WORTH WATCHING
Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan stayed aggressive with his play calling after Moss went out at halftime against New Orleans, which lined up in an eight-man front and basically challenged the Vikings to beat them with the pass. The Titans have the NFL's 26th-ranked pass defense, but Fisher is one of the league's top defensive minds.
ON THE SPOT
Nate Burleson, Marcus Robinson and tight end Jermaine Wiggins all came through in the receiving game last week, before and after Moss went out. The pressure will be on the Vikings' other receivers to continue to make plays.
INJURY UPDATE
Titans: WR Tyrone Calico (knee), TE Shad Meier (appendix) and S Lance Schulters (foot) are out; CB Andre Woolfolk (back) is doubtful; RB Chris Brown (shoulder), LB Rocky Calmus (back), DT Jared Clauss (concussion), DT Albert Haynesworth (ankle), TE Erron Kinney (calf), QB Steve McNair (sternum), OT Fred Miller (ankle), G Benji Olson (groin), DE Juqua Thomas (ankle) and WR Drew Bennett (calf) are questionable. Vikings: C Cory Withrow (knee) is out; LB Chris Claiborne (calf) is doubtful; RB Michael Bennett (knee) and WR Randy Moss (hamstring) are questionable; and RB Moe Williams (calf), LB E.J. Henderson (knee) and LB Raonall Smith (concussion) are probable.
KEY MATCHUP
Vikings receivers vs. Titans defensive backs: The Vikings are averaging a league-leading 353.2 passing yards a game, while the Titans are allowing 234.3. Culpepper has passed for a league-best 18 TDs, and Tennessee has allowed 11, although it has seven interceptions. The numbers say the Vikings will have opportunities to make plays in the passing game. It is up to Burleson, Robinson and the rest to make them.
QUARTERBACKS
This has been a painful season for the Titans' Steve McNair. Through six weeks, he is tied for 27th among NFL QBs with a 67.9 rating and has completed only 57.5 percent of his passes for four touchdowns and six interceptions. Meanwhile, Daunte Culpepper continues to enjoy a career season for the Vikings after passing for five touchdowns in last Sunday's victory over the Saints.
RUNNING BACKS
Chris Brown has filled the departed Eddie George's shoes and then some. The second-year back comes into the game as the NFL's second-leading rusher with 608 yards. Injuries and Onterrio Smith's four-game NFL suspension have forced the Vikings into a running back-by-committee approach, but all their backs have been effective. Rookie Mewelde Moore had his second consecutive strong start in New Orleans and will lead off again today.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Moss' 26 receptions for 394 yards and eight touchdowns are all team highs, but Nate Burleson had a game-high 134 yards on six catches at New Orleans, and Marcus Robinson contributed two touchdown receptions. The Titans have statistically the top receiving duo in the AFC in Derrick Mason (36-429-2 TDs) and Drew Bennett (32-370-1).
TIGHT ENDS
Jermaine Wiggins returned to the Vikings' lineup in style Sunday night, catching five passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns, and even showed off some old break-dancing moves after the second score. Frank Wycheck retired after last season for the Titans, and Erron Kinney will miss his fourth game in a row because of a strained right calf. That leaves the starting job in the hands of rookie Ben Troupe, who has caught only five passes for 32 yards.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Except for a bad snap out of the shotgun, the Vikings' line had a strong game at New Orleans. In fact, after reviewing the tape, Mike Tice called it the unit's best performance of the season. Tennessee's offensive line has done a good job of opening holes for Chris Brown in the running game and protecting Steve McNair, who has been sacked only nine times. But not many lines can stack up to Minnesota's, which is among the best in the league, from tackle to tackle.
DEFENSIVE LINE
With seven sacks in the past two games, the Vikings have done a little better job of pressuring the quarterback lately, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. As for the Titans, they must find a way to get some heat on Culpepper, who has been sacked only 15 times and is very good at avoiding the rush when his protection breaks down. Tennessee sorely misses defensive end Jevon Kearse, who signed with Philadelphia during the offseason.
LINEBACKERS
Tennessee's Keith Bulluck is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance and leads the team in tackles with 53, but the Titans suffered a major loss during the first week of training camp when fellow outside linebacker Peter Sirmon suffered a season-ending knee injury. For the Vikings, Raonall Smith will start at outside linebacker for Chris Claiborne (calf), but E.J. Henderson returns as the starting middle linebacker after missing the past two games with a knee injury.
SECONDARY
The Vikings finally got their first interception of the season last week, and it was a big one, as Antoine Winfield's sideline pick and 56-yard return set up a second-quarter touchdown that made the score 14-0. In the end, though, it was the same old story, with the defense holding on for dear life. Andre Dyson is a weak link at cornerback for the Titans, but they have a former Pro Bowler on the other side in Samari Rolle, and free safety Lamont Thompson is tied for the league lead with three interceptions.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Except for that 53-yard run off a fake punt, the Vikings' special teams had a pretty solid night in New Orleans, covering well and getting a late 33-yard kickoff return from Mewelde Moore that they turned into the game-clinching TD. Today's spotlight will be on the kickers—old man Morten Andersen against even older former Viking Gary Anderson — in a matchup of the top two scorers in NFL history.
COACHES
Jeff Fisher is one of the NFL's top coaches, but injuries and free-agent defections have seriously eroded the Titans' talent level. The Titans have a six-game winning streak against NFC foes. But unless the Vikings are badly outcoached or outplayed, this is a game they should win.

Vikings WR Moss tests injured hamstring

Minnesota Vikings receiver Randy Moss tested his strained right hamstring, but his status for Minnesota's game against Tennessee this weekend remained uncertain.
Moss ran on a treadmill and missed his third straight practice. Coach Mike Tice said his star receiver looked "pretty good" and would do more work on Oct. 23. Tice said he expected to decide the morning of the game whether to play Moss against the Titans.
"Certainly we know he's not 100 percent," Tice said. "We'll just weigh the options and see how it goes."
Tice said Moss, listed as questionable for the game, felt no soreness in the hamstring.
Moss, who has played in 101 consecutive regular-season games, leads the league with eight touchdown catches. The All-Pro receiver was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday night's game in New Orleans when he tripped and fell after getting tangled up with Saints safety Jay Bellamy on a pass that was intercepted in the end zone.

40 Yard Dash

Does anyone know the exact time Randy Moss runs the 40 in?
